Your Questions About Bmw Cat Back Exhaust

William asks…

03 maxima aftermarket exhaust?

I have and 03 maxima and I wanted to get alittle more power out of it.I have the cold air intake on it already and now I was thinking of doing an exhaust either from the headers on back or just a cat back exhaust. I do not want the car to sound annoying so I thought I would do the aftermarket exhaust and instead of using a aftermarket muffler I could put on a stock one.My question is will doing this not let the car gain much or any horsepower or will it do some sort of damage to it. If you know of an aftermarket exhaust system that sounds nice kinda like on the G35 cars or a nice tone like some bmw‘s have then please let me know.

Administrator answers:

Most of the aftermarket exhausts you are thinking about in terms of noise levels use a :”straight through” design. These are going to be among the loudest of mufflers by design, becuase the exhaust gases go straight through the muffler with out hitting any baffles (which reflect and dampen the sound waves)….your orignal muffler is big bucks from nissan because it is specifically matched with that car to reduce noise.
The gains will be limited from exhaust modifications anyway. You may want to try using a chambered muffler from a company such as Borla or Magnaflow,…..This may let your max breathe out a little easier, while putting some meat into the exhaust note, without being obnoxious. You can get a unit like those for under $100 (try sumitt.com) and have you’re local shop weld it up to your stock exhaust pipes (which on an ’03 maxima may be mandrel bent from the factory) Tell them you want to save your stock muffler in case you end up never finding a setup you like, and need to reinstall it.

Bmw Exhaust question.?

I am thinking of getting a cat back straight pipe for my car along with my new muffler that I bought but it does not make noise because of the silencer in the stock exhaust pipe. the only muffler shops around in my city are only available to do Aluminum piping which means rust in a few years so should i go ahead and pay the close to $1000 for a stainless steel sr pipe or go with the $200-400 aluminum pipe which i would have to replace once or twice. also are the pipes under cars like bmw aluminum or stainless steal? thanks.

Administrator answers:

Last I checked aluminum does NOT rust.. Stick with stock most all Aftermarket stuff high performance or not typically only lasts till just after the warrently is up.. You could go super high-end like Borla.. But stock is best,,, No aftermarket system available actually increases power over stock anyways..

bmw Car exhaust question need advise!!!?

I am thinking of getting a cat back straight pipe for my car along with my new muffler that I bought but it does not make noise because of the silencer in the stock exhaust pipe. the only muffler shops around in my city are only available to do steel piping which means rust in a few years so should i go ahead and pay the close to $1000 for a stainless steel sr pipe or go with the $200-400 steel pipe which i would have to replace once or twice. also are the pipes under cars like bmw steel or stainless steal and if i do go with the steel pipe will it lower the value of the car or could i keep the original piping and muffler when i decide to sell the car.

Administrator answers:

Save your money, go with steel pipe it will last a long time.

Ken asks…

Do i need to upgrade my catalytic converter if i put in racing headers?

I have a 92 bmw 325is and I want to put performance headers on my car. I wanted to know if I had to upgrade my catalytic converter. I plan to put a cat back exhaust on as well. Tell me what you think.

Administrator answers:

If your going to be spending money on ”racing headers” as well as a catback exhaust then it would be advisable to get a hi floe cat….

Sticking with a stock cat will be somewhat restrictive, so its best to replace it with a hi flow version.

Either that or you can gut the original cat ;)
