Your Questions About Bmw Cat Back Exhaust

August 16, 2013

Robert asks…

BMW 1986 325es used. should i get it? reliable?

Should i bite on this car? is this a reliable car? i am getting it used and the problems are as follows:

Carfax reports a minor accident in 2003. They have also reported structural and frame damage was. We have inspected the car and see nothing that would effect it’s safety or roadworthiness. The car has been driven 7 years since the report. Odometer does not work, all other guages work fine, turn signals, headlights, brake lights are all in working order

here is what has been done to it (mechanical)

We have just installed a complete new cat back exhaust, new guibo center support shaft bushing, new plugs, air cleaner and valve cover cover gasket.

some notes:

This is a clean, good running example with cold air conditioning, smooth 5 speed transmission, good clutch and the high torque 6 cylinder engine.

i know that the e30 is a classic car, with a huge following, and i love it, but am worried that this is a very old car and i am not a mechanic, and wouldnt know what to do if something went wrong. I dont like the idea of pumping money into this car every few months.

cost: 3750

should i get it? looks like a great fun car

Administrator answers:

I would pass, and I used to have an e30. They are fun cars to drive, but that’s way too much money for a 25 year old car with unknown mileage. For that price you can probably find a car that is at least ten years newer and will probably have less problems to boot.

Administrator answers:

I drive a 1990 E30 318is every day and its a great car. The accident damage would concern me, but if it drove in a straight line i would feel better about it. E30s need not cost the earth to run. Parts are cheeper than a modern car and there is much less to go wrong. The cost 3750 what is that £ or $? If its £ then that’s way too much. £2000 absolute tops. Check out http://www.e30zone.net/ for some good info.
Most important thing is to check for rust around the wheel arches, sun roof, battery tray and bulk head.
The M20 engine was also prone to overheating if not looked after which usually means the cylinder head is cracked or needs skimming.

Sandy asks…

How much Horsepower do I have?

I am rolling a E36 BMW M3
Mods include Turner Motorsport Chip
Autothority Cat Back Exhaust
Unknown Brand Air Intake – Cone K&N Airfilter (no airbox)

The car stock is 245 HP
The chip is supposed to add 19 HP

Administrator answers:

It would be best to go to a Dyno to see exactly how much horsepower you gained or lost

but I would guess you have gained about 20-40hp, so your car should be around 275hp or so…

Daniel asks…

Aftermarket auto parts, any good sources?!?

I’m fixing up my 1994 BMW 325i and am looking for LOTS of parts to make it into my dream car. I’m talking carbon fiber hood and new doors, sides, bumpers, headers, intake, cat-back exhaust, supercharger (or turbo, still haven’t decided), interior…LOTS of interior…if you know any good sites or sources for me, please give it an answer. Thanks!

Administrator answers:

I’ve found a lot of great smaller parts at Brandsport.com. I don’t think they carry the bigger stuff, like doors and hoods, but for nice Gorilla lugs and PIAA wipers and parts like that, they have the best prices and options I’ve found online. Hope this site helps once you’re ready to put the finishing touches on your 325i. Best of luck with the upgrades! :)

George asks…

I need help with my car!?

I have a 2010 BMW and was wondering if I could put 18 inch Oz Superleggera wheels on it wrapped in Z tires… I’ve heard that 15, 16, and 17 would fit but you have to delete/roll the fenders to be able to fit 18′s on there. I want a cat back exhaust system too…and a sound system. Anyone willing to help me out here? What’s the best? Funny thing is I’m a girl. And yes I know this is going to cost a shitload of money.

Administrator answers:

Your wheels will fit. And dinan makes a good exhaust for bmw I think it doesnt conflict with your cars warranty either. As for the sound system id leave it the way it is unless you want more bass at that point hit up a best buy or something they are not bad but it will give you a nice sound at a good price.

Chris asks…

I need help picking my first car?

My 16th birthday is coming up an my parents told me they would get me a car
My family is wealthy so money really isn’t an object
While most kids I go to school with would pick a BMW or something like that I decided I wanted something else

So right now it’s between 2 cars for me

OPTION 1:
a 240sx hatch with s15 front conversion
Rb26
Hks downpipe, 4 inch exhaust system, intake, fcd, boost controller, turbo upgrade
Front mount intercooler
Stand alone engine management
1000cc injectors, dual 255-lph pumps
Spark plug upgrade
Hks cams
(600+ WHP)

OPTION 2:
an AE86
2jz swap
GReddy t78 single turbo upgrade
GReddy large-plenum intake manifold
720cc injectors
GReddy e-Manage ultimate
GReddy iridium spark plugs
GReddy downpipe, front mount intercooler, boost cut controller, type r BOV, cat-back titanium exhaust, airinx open element intake
(600+ WHP)

Me and my best friend are putting in the majority of the stuff
He has an rx7 with a 2JZ-GTE that he swapped himself so I’m not really worried about it getting messed up

and yes I am a girl
American cars suck nuts IMO
But both my parents drive American made cars
My mother has an Audi q7 as her primary car
But my father has a gmc truck and a 2011 challenger (which my mother sometimes drives)
Don’t worry DMI the very first car I drove was my cousins 370z
It’s actually what got me so into modded cars
I’ve driven it plenty of times (noob drifted it too)
It was 680 WHP but now it’s pushing 800 so he won’t let me drive it anymore

I’m not stupid enough to mod the car then take it out for a high speed joyride in the middle of traffic so I’ll be fine
Plus either one will be caged and have racing harnesses so if I do wreck I’ll have a better chance of surviving
I honestly don’t like the way the supra looks
Or the new GTR

I could ask for a motorex imported r34 v spec ii because you can get them for 90k
But I feel like if I did that I would get hassled alot by cops

Administrator answers:

I would choose option 1. Its somethin that probably sounds sick and would make everyone else want it. So that would be my choice if i could pick one

Richard asks…

catayltic converter replacement ideas?

hello geeks,
I have a 1990,bmw 525i.I bought this car a year back.So far i never changed my catalystic converter.(let me call it as CAT from now).Hope you know the exhaust system in BMW.I will explain. From the exhaust manifold it connects to a CAT(with all two way pipes ) then it goes to a central muffler and then the last muffler.
I think my CAT is clogged very much.I thought replacing the CAT with two straight pipes. Please note that there is no strict laws for emissions in my place. Will this conversion (CAT to straight pipes) and keeping the central and last muffler untouched is a good idea or not?i can feel my car is sluggish and gives low mileage.

To be frank it was giving me 6.6 kmpl. i parked my car in the garage and went for a vacation 0f 25 days and after my vacation period my mileage dropped to 4.9kmpl.does this rings any bells in yoou??Nobody drove my car in my absense.Right now i added some fuel inj cleaner to the fuel and running.
expecting your advices
FYI I am living in bahrain not in US where emissions is not a big issue and no worries of getting a ticket.IF i replace the CAT by two straight pipes of 4 inch dia will the pressure of the exhaust gases affect my central and end muffler which will make a damage to them???
If i replace the CAT by means of a another muffler how will be result?
please advice whether i can go for a muffler or straight pipes.

Administrator answers:

Do it, your catalytic converter is clogged up. Your car will run better, have more power, and use less gas.
