Your Questions About X 15

July 18, 2013

Lisa asks…

What are the materials of the North American X-15 inside and outside?

Also, how thick was the Inconnel X outer shell. The reason why I’m asking is because that stuff is heavy and its hard for the X-15 to land empty weighing only 15,000 while fighting 12,000 degrees of heat outside your windshield. How thick was the outer shell? an inch, two inches ? please help. 10 points for anyone who answers.

looks like a thin layer was plated onto titanium or steel to protect them
They could not be 1 or 2 inches thick or the plane would be too heavy.
Aluminum airplanes thickness is thin metal so the plane is light. 0.1 – 0.2 inches.http://www.daviddarling.info/encyclopedia/X/X-15.html
