Your Questions About X100

Mark asks…

How do you find percentage composition of H2O from chemical formula of a hydrate?

I know that the molar mass of H2O is 18. To find % composition its the molar mass of an element divided by the total molar mass x100. I just don’t understand what they mean by hydrate.

Administrator answers:

A hydrate is a term used to describe any substance that contains water. To find percentage composition, find the molar mass and the moles of the of the entire compound which will then be 100%. So find moles of water in that compound and find its percentage by relating it to the 100% above
