Sandy asks…

which module should i use for GUI programming in Perl Tk or Tkx?

hi all. i m confused what module shud i use for GUI in perl for windows. With Active perl i installed, Tkx module is there.
and there is no documentation for Tkx. Only Tk module’s documentation is available.
Experts Please tell me what to do.

Administrator answers:

The quick answer …

Use the Tkx module, but rely on the corresponding Tk documentation.

The long answer …

Tk is a toolkit that allows you to create applications with graphical interfaces for Windows, Mac OS X and X11. The Tk toolkit is native to the Tcl programming language, but its ease of use and cross-platform availability has made it the GUI toolkit of choice for many other dynamic languages as well.

Tkx is a Perl module that makes the Tk toolkit available to Perl programs. By loading the Tkx module Perl programs can create windows and fill them with text, images, buttons and other controls that make up the user interface of the application.

The Tkx module provides yet another Tk interface for Perl. Tk is a GUI toolkit tied to the Tcl language, and Tkx provides a bridge to Tcl that allows Tk based applications to be written in Perl.

The main idea behind Tkx is that it is a very thin wrapper on top of Tcl, i.e. That what you get is exactly the behaviour you read about in the Tcl/Tk documentation with no surprises added by the Perl layer.

So … If you use a function like Tkx::button() … You can read the documentation for Tk button() to figure out what it does.

Charles asks…

Why is the macbook so good?

Why is Mcintosh better than Microsoft run systems? please list some points and please no patriotism or blinded bias, please give me reasons?

I’ve owned a PC for 16+years, aren’t all the programs mainly suited towards microsoft based systems?

Administrator answers:

This is mainly a question of personal preference – you use what you like. Personally, I like that it’s stable, it’s secure (no viruses), it’s built on an open-source core, I can run a ton of Linux apps on it through the X11 emulator that comes with OS X, and the design isn’t treated like an afterthought. I can’t spend more than 5 minutes in Windows anymore without getting incredibly frustrated by how awkward and clunky the interface is. OS X is just easier to use and there’s a lot less hassle. Spotlight, Spaces, Exposé, Dashboard, Time Machine, and QuickLook are all built into OS X, and they’re all incredibly useful and (for me) essential. Plus everything is very consistent – Command-Q is always quit, Command-, (comma) is always Preferences, Command-C is always copy, etc. I like not having to remember 20 different sets of keyboard shortcuts for 20 different applications.

This is all my opinion, though. If you like Windows and you’re smart enough to have anti-virus software and a firewall, then by all means keep using it. I can’t tell you which platform is better-suited to your needs. I will say you should at least go to an Apple store and try one out, though.

As for OS X not having any programs, the only thing OS X is really lacking is games. So far there aren’t a lot of game developers that have jumped on the Mac platform, but that’s slowly changing. Other than that, you’d be hard-pressed to find a Windows app that doesn’t have a Mac version or a Mac equivalent. I’ve been using OS X for almost 3 years now and I have only run into one situation where I needed a Windows-only app, and that was for a 3D modeling class at school (I had to use 3DS Max – for some reason we couldn’t use Cinema 4D or Maya). I just installed an XP in a virtual machine and ran it in Parallels, though, and then deleted it when the class was over.

Susan asks…

I just downloaded Inkscape, What now?

I just download it and now It’s not letting me open it. What’s wrong?
Thanks. I have window’s XP. I downloaded it from that site. The big download now button in the top right hand corner. I’m not sure what else I would need to download.

Administrator answers:

Inkscape illustrator

not sure where problem is occurring, verify that correct file is downloaded for computer OS, win/ mac/ linux , installers are complete, if anything is not included, then you may require gtk+ for windows, or X11 for mac, verify those are installed first, then try running again,

Lisa asks…

The program GIMP wont open on my mac. i click it and it closes immediately. What do i do?

Administrator answers:

Have you checked the gimp website? There is more to using gimp than just downloading the main program. You probably need to run X11 (this is unix/linux related stuff). I think there is a version of Gimp that is more Mac friendly, but you really do need to check the gimp website for more information.

Lizzie asks…

ABOUT GIMP

Introduction to GIMP

GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.

GIMP is written and developed under X11 on UNIX platforms. But basically the same code also runs on MS Windows and Mac OS X.
