George asks…

x11 won’t quit on my powerbook g4 running leopard?

i have a powerbook g4 15″, 1.67ghz, 2gb ram, 100 gig hdd.

i had to install x11 to run inkscape and gimp.
now i can’t quit x11. i mean, i quit it, but it will just open itself again.
i cant trash it because of this problem, and i can’t shutdown my computer because x11 opening cancels the shutdown process.

Administrator answers:

Try manually powering down your computer. Hold in the power button for a few seconds til it powers off. Then turn it back on and delete x11.
Instead of gimp download seashore. It’s built on the same foundation as gimp but it’s a native mac app so no x11 required. You’ll still need it for inkscape though. Sounds like a bad install of either x11 itself or inkscape or gimp. Try uninstalling everything and starting from scratch.

Mark asks…

Run exe c++ program (dev c++) on mac?

I have Dev C++ on my macbook (running on 10.7 lion), I can make it work using wine (X11), it opens fine, it compiles when the codes are good, it shows the error when there are errors, but it won’t run the exe file. I tried to run it myself (by opening the exe file itself) but it still won’t show. Any advice on what I should do?

Administrator answers:

The .exe file is a Windows executable file – that is one that runs in the Windows operating system. You will either need to run it on a Windows system or configure Wine to handle it….

But why not just use a native OSX C++ editor?

mac word prossesor ?

hi im looking for a preferbly free mac/ word prossesor much like microsoft word im needing one for my mac book any help would be great.

Administrator answers:

Open Office and Neo Office are the two widely used Free Word Processors for Mac.
Open Office is not yet ported to Mac completely. It runs over X11. Open Office Aqua will run natively on a Mac but it is still under development.
You can download Open Office at :

You can download Open Office Aqua (Alpha version) at :

Neo Office is a suite developed in Java. I would recommend this over Open Office. Neo Office is available for download at :

However if you are ready to spend $79(or less in amazon), I would recommend iWorks from Apple. You can download a 30 day demo version from :
I would suggest you to try this.

Jenny asks…

TN3270 for Mac OS X ?

I need a good TN3270 emulator for the Mac that supports IND$FILE and 132 char wide screens. x3270 does not handle oversize screens correctly and Mocha only has a TN5250. So, what’s the TN3270 of choice on the Mac (or how do I get x3270 to handle 132×43)?

Administrator answers:

To my knowledge, there’s only a hand full of programs (some you know already .. .you’ll have to google for the rest):

TN3270: free, but looks like from a time machine from the 80s (it’s around OS X v. 10.2 but looks OS9′ish). Works okay though (no file transfers). Http://

x3270: free. I’m surprised you say it doesn’t handle oversized screens (it’s the de-facto standard on Linux), but does file transfers. Requires X11 though and I know it handles foreign codepages etc. Right. If you have Xcode you can build it yourself (quite an endeavor, make sure you get past v3.3.10). Http://

ZOC: Payware. Admittedly looks very modern and nice. The feature page says it supports IND$FILE too. It’s rather broad featured (can also be used to emulate Unix’ish stuff like Xterm, VT220, etc.) so maybe you can justify the price with some of the extra functions. Http://

Unix Executable File – mac?

How do I execute a “Unix Executable File” in Mac OS X? This is NOT a file creator type problem. The file actually is a Unix file, I just don’t know anything about Unix. I know how to navigate to the directory the file is in using the Terminal, but then what?

Administrator answers:

Hi there…you’ll need to install X11 in order to run unix executable files:

Nancy asks…

Slimming-down MAC Leopard OS disk…?

Hi, fitting a 64GB SSD in place of a 120GB mechanical disk, and the MAC OS partition is unusually large for such few programs, namely 55GB.

What is the default size of a Leopard OS?

How / what can I do to clean it up?

Thanks. (little experience of using Macs)

Administrator answers:

Install Leopard or snow leopard – and choose customise whilst installing – de-select x11 , printer drivers, language packs, and install the minimum system.

Consider using an an external drive for music & Photos and get itunes / iphoto to look in that location instead
